I have had one of these (or very similar) for 26yrs. Today it didn't heat up for a a minute but then worked. Its probably time to replace it as wires degrade over the years. I have changed elements from time to time and I had to lubricate the mechanical timer but other than that it's rock solid.

I placed it in the balcony sliding door, which gets direct sun for most of the afternoon. I followed the setup instructions, added some cardboard for insulation, and surprisingly, it worked very well even though the door wasn’t standard-sized.
